Few shipboard portraits from the 1890s show off-duty life as plainly as this group of singers from the battleship U.S.S. Maine, a bachelors' glee club photographed in 1896. The Maine had been commissioned only the year before, in 1895, so the crew was still new to its ship. The image survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for large-format views of American places and people. Two years later the ship exploded and sank in Havana Harbor, an event that helped bring the United States into the Spanish-American War.
