Taken on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative in 1896, this group portrait shows the U.S.S. Maine before its name became tied to war. Its title pairs the battleship with an army and navy union, suggesting a gathering of sailors and officers, though the record does not identify the men. The Maine was commissioned in 1895, and when it exploded in Havana harbor in February 1898, its loss helped set off the Spanish-American War. Made by the Detroit Publishing Company, the picture offers a glimpse of the ship's personnel in the years before that event.
