A visitor is received aboard the battleship Maine in this view, a scene of formal ceremony on a warship of the late 1890s. The Maine was commissioned in 1895 and was among the newest and most powerful vessels in the United States Navy at the time. Its later fate gives the picture added weight: the ship exploded and sank in Havana harbor on February 15, 1898, an event that helped push the country into the Spanish-American War. The Detroit Publishing Company made the glass negative, and its date of about 1896 is an estimate.
