This stereograph records the launch of the battleship Iowa, which slid down the ways at a Philadelphia shipyard in 1896. The Navy's new steel battleships of that decade were a major public event, and crowds often gathered for launchings like this one. The card was issued by Griffith & Griffith, a commercial publisher of stereoscopic views. Its two nearly identical images, meant to be viewed together in a stereoscope, would have given viewers a sense of depth and of the ship's great bulk on the slipway.
