Waiting on the ways at Bath, Maine, the battleship *Georgia* sits ready for her launch in this 1904 view. Bath was a major shipbuilding center, and the yard there built many of the warships that expanded the U.S. Navy in the early twentieth century. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its wide survey of American places and industries, made the 8 x 10 inch glass negative. Launch scenes like this one show the scale of the ship and the crowds and preparation that surrounded a major naval event.
