This view shows the battleship *Mississippi* during the Hudson-Fulton Celebration of 1909, a New York commemoration of the 300th anniversary of Henry Hudson's voyage up the river and the 100th anniversary of Robert Fulton's steamboat. The naval parade on the Hudson was a centerpiece of the festivities, drawing large crowds to the waterfront and showcasing the growing strength of the American fleet. The picture was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to record American cities, landscapes and events around the turn of the twentieth century. Its large 8 by 10 inch glass negative preserves fine detail of the ship's hull and superstructure.
