Visible on the building at left, the "Bush Terminal" lettering places this view of the battleship Kearsarge at the busy Brooklyn waterfront complex of that name, rather than at sea or in a naval yard. The ship was named for the Union sloop-of-war that sank the Confederate raider CSS *Alabama* off Cherbourg, France, in 1864. Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that photographed American landmarks and scenes in the early twentieth century, made this glass-plate negative between 1900 and 1915, when battleships were a central symbol of American naval power.
