Few details identify the ship or waterway in this dry plate negative, and its title was supplied by a cataloger rather than taken from a caption. It belongs to the Detroit Publishing Company's large body of views from roughly 1890 to 1910, a period when the American navy was growing and warships were a common subject for photographers. The company, based in Detroit, recorded towns, scenery and industry across the country. The 6.5 by 8.5 inch glass plate was given to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949 and later entered the Library of Congress.
