Lead with the ship itself: this picture shows the battleship *Wisconsin* on the Hudson River, where it took part in the 1909 Hudson-Fulton Celebration. That New York event marked the 300th anniversary of Henry Hudson's 1609 voyage and the 100th anniversary of Robert Fulton's first successful steamboat run on the river. Naval parades and reviews were a central part of the festivities, showing the growing strength of the American fleet at the start of the twentieth century. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its wide travel and scenic photography, made the glass plate negative.
