At Bath, Maine, the battleship Georgia went down the ways at the Bath Iron Works in 1904. She was one of the Virginia-class battleships, built as the United States Navy expanded its fleet of steel warships in the years after the Spanish-American War. Launchings were public occasions, and yard workers, local officials and invited guests typically gathered near the water to watch the hull enter the river. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its broad range of American views, made this glass negative, which records the event and the shipyard that built her.
