The Navy's steel cruiser *Pensacola* is the ship named here, and the picture shows her crew at work hoisting one of her boats, the launch, back aboard. Ship's boats were a daily part of naval life, used for ferrying officers and stores and for landing parties, and raising them by davit or derrick took coordinated teamwork from the seamen on deck. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this glass-plate negative in the 1890s, sold views of American ships, ports and people to a wide public. Its record dates the plate to roughly 1890 to 1901, a period when the steel-hulled Navy was taking shape, so the scene offers a close look at late nineteenth-century shipboard routine.
