The birthplace at Gori, Georgia, was a modest house where Josef Stalin was born in 1878, when the town was part of the Russian Empire. The caption card, which gives the place its Soviet-era name, carries no date and its details are unverified. The hand-coloring on this single slide gives the scene a painted softness, which suits a site that was carefully preserved in the Soviet years. Stalin's father worked as a cobbler, and the simple house later became the centerpiece of a museum devoted to the future leader's early life.
