The record gives little beyond the name, which appears on this Detroit Publishing Company glass negative as the U.S.S. Surnal, a steamboat cataloged among government vessels. The negative dates from roughly 1900 to 1905, when the company was photographing American rivers, harbors and working craft for its commercial views. Government steamboats of that era often handled survey, supply or dredging work on inland waterways, though the record does not say what this vessel did. Its 8 by 10 inch glass plate preserves considerable detail for anyone studying early twentieth-century river craft.
