The particular interest of this picture is its subject: the battleship U.S.S. Alabama, named for the state and commissioned in 1900, when the U.S. Navy was building up its fleet of steel battleships. The photograph is an 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its broad survey of American scenery, cities and ships around 1900. Glass plates of this size were the standard for careful work in that period, and their sharp detail still shows the ship's hull and superstructure. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
