Cooks on the berth deck of the battleship Maine pose for this 1896 group portrait, a rare look at the crew's working quarters, where sailors slept and meals were prepared. The ship had been in service only about a year, and in 1898 she was destroyed by an explosion in Havana harbor, an event that helped draw the United States into the Spanish-American War. The negative is attributed to a photographer named Hart based on similar numbers, and it reached the Library of Congress through the Detroit Publishing Company collection.
