Few details in the record name the occasion, but the scene shows a Marine guard parading across the quarter deck of the U.S.S. Newark. The quarter deck, the raised aft section of a warship, was the ship's ceremonial center, so drilled ranks there were part of routine honors and formal occasions. The Newark was a steel protected cruiser of the 1890s, one of the new vessels that marked the Navy's rebuilding after decades of neglect. The Detroit Publishing Company made this glass negative, and its catalog places the picture between 1891 and 1901.
