Here the camera looks forward along the quarterdeck of the U.S.S. Texas, a second-class battleship commissioned in 1895 that became one of the more celebrated ships of the Spanish-American War in 1898. The Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American landmarks and naval vessels for tourist views and published them widely, made this glass negative, and its catalog numbering places the picture in the years just before 1901. Shots like this one, taken on deck, show how crews worked and lived aboard the steel-hulled warships of the period, with the ship's gun mounts, rigging, and open deck space laid out in the foreground.
