Few pictures on this board show a battleship being worked rather than posed, and this one captures the men at a loading task aboard the U.S.S. Texas. The Texas was commissioned in 1895 and saw action at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba in 1898, so this photograph dates from her early years in service. Handling shells and powder was dangerous, heavy work, and the crew's posture and grouping show how closely it had to be coordinated. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, was known for documenting American places and work at the turn of the century.
