Aboard the battleship USS Texas, a congregation of sailors gathers for a Sunday worship service, captured on a glass-plate negative dated August 8, 1897. The Texas was commissioned in 1895 and was among the new steel warships that helped modernize the U.S. Navy in the years before the Spanish-American War. Religious services like this one were a regular part of shipboard routine, bringing enlisted men and officers together in a formal, disciplined setting. The image comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented American places and everyday life around the turn of the twentieth century.
