This view shows the U.S.S. Texas, one of the early steel battleships of the U.S. Navy, photographed in the years between 1890 and 1901. The ship was commissioned in 1895 and saw action at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba during the Spanish-American War in 1898, a conflict that showed the value of big-gun armored warships. The glass negative is catalogued by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its large-format views of American places and ships, and the record notes that Edward H. Hart may have made the photograph. Its size, 11 by 14 inches, reflects the detail that wet-plate and dry-plate photographers prized for documenting naval vessels.
