Listed in a 1901 Detroit Publishing Company catalog as the cruiser *Concord*, this glass-plate negative actually shows the battleship *Texas*, one of the Navy's first modern steel battleships, completed in 1895. The mislabel is a useful reminder of how loosely early commercial photographers recorded warships, which were often hard to tell apart at a distance. The plate's 8 x 10 inch format and the Hart copyright notation reflect the large-format view-making of the period, when such images were sold as souvenirs and as records of the growing American fleet.
