Named for Lt. William B. Cushing, who slipped a spar torpedo under the Confederate ironclad *Albemarle* on the Roanoke River in 1864, this vessel belongs to the Navy's early torpedo-boat program of the 1890s. Such craft were fast and low-profile, built to strike larger warships with a single explosive charge, a role that seemed central to naval planning before the dreadnought era. The glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers recorded American ships and landscapes across these years, and its catalog-based date places it near the turn of the century.
