Grant's Tomb rises in the background of this view, which places the cruiser U.S.S. *Columbia* on the Hudson River in New York. *Columbia* was a protected cruiser commissioned in 1894, one of the fast, steel-hulled warships the Navy built in the 1890s to modernize its fleet. The glass-plate negative came from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its commercial views of American places. It dates from roughly the turn of the century, when Grant's Tomb was still a fairly new landmark, completed in 1897.
