Shown on deck with its 6-pounder gun, the U.S.S. Vixen was a small Navy gunboat, a class of vessel the United States relied on for coastal and river duty in the 1890s. Quick-firing guns of this size, usually Hotchkiss designs, were a common armament on American warships of that decade, and the photograph captures the sailors and the weapon they worked. The Detroit Publishing Company made this 8 x 10 inch glass negative in the years around 1900, when it was documenting American places and people for commercial sale. The record dates it between 1890 and 1901, based on the company's catalog.
