A landing party from the cruiser U.S.S. Columbia is the subject of this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, made sometime between 1893 and 1905. The Columbia, commissioned in 1894, was one of the Navy's protected cruisers of that era, and landing parties of sailors and Marines were often sent ashore to protect American interests, keep order, or represent the ship on foreign visits. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued many views of American and foreign scenes around the turn of the century, catalogued the negative. The men may be Marines, though that attribution rests only on the style of the numbering.
