The U.S.S. Indiana was the lead ship of a class of American battleships built in the 1890s, when the Navy was modernizing its fleet with large-caliber guns and steel hulls. The ship saw action at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba in 1898 during the Spanish-American War. This glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to document railroads, cities and scenic sites for commercial views, many of them later hand-tinted. The Library of Congress holds it through a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
