The U.S.S. *Indiana* was the lead ship of a three-vessel class of American battleships, and its steel hull was built by William Cramp & Sons in Philadelphia. It was commissioned in 1895 and fought in the Spanish-American War, taking part in the Battle of Santiago de Cuba in 1898. These two close-variant glass negatives came from the Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American scenery and industry widely, and its 1901 catalog supports the late 1890s date. Worth noticing are the ship's low, heavily armored profile and the tall military masts typical of the era.
