The lead ship of her class, the battleship *Indiana* was commissioned in 1895, and this glass-plate negative captures her during the years when she was new to the fleet. She was one of the first battleships built for the U.S. Navy after a long lull in heavy warship construction, and she took part in the Spanish-American War in 1898, including the Battle of Santiago de Cuba. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced this view, sold large numbers of scenes of American places and ships, and its 8 by 10 inch plates offer unusually fine detail of the ship's hull and superstructure.
