What sets this view apart is the battleship *Indiana* on the Hudson River, with Grant's Tomb rising in the background on the Manhattan shore. The scene belongs to the Dewey Naval Parade of 1899, a New York celebration of Admiral George Dewey, whose squadron destroyed the Spanish fleet at Manila Bay in 1898 during the Spanish-American War. Warships lined up for the parade drew large crowds to the waterfront. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this glass negative, was known for its broad photographic record of American places and events around the turn of the century.
