Commissioned in 1895, the U.S.S. Indiana was the lead ship of the first class of modern steel battleships built for the U.S. Navy, a design that signaled the country's growing ambitions at sea. The ship saw action at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba in 1898 during the Spanish-American War, when the navy's heavy-gun battleships were tested in combat. This glass negative, attributed to Hart and linked to a Detroit Publishing Company catalog number, dates from the years around that period, when the firm was producing views of American ships and places. That the plate later passed into the holdings of a Colorado historical society shows how such negatives traveled far from where they were made.
