Two near-identical glass plate negatives show the forward turret of the U.S.S. Indiana, with its 13-inch guns and a sailor standing in the foreground to give a sense of scale. Commissioned in 1895, Indiana was the first of the Navy's new battleships of that name and fought at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba during the Spanish-American War in 1898. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced large numbers of American views around the turn of the century, issued the scene as a commercial picture, and its record shows the image was later given to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949.
