The U.S.S. Indiana was the lead ship of the first class of modern battleships built for the U.S. Navy, and she was commissioned in 1895 as the country's fleet was being rebuilt. She saw action in the Spanish-American War in 1898, which made her one of the most closely followed warships of her day. This 11 by 14 inch glass negative is possibly the work of Edward H. Hart and was listed in the Detroit Publishing Company's catalog around 1901. It preserves a detailed view of the battleship during the years when American naval power was rising.
