Few details in this record set the picture apart from its neighbors, but the subject is the U.S.S. *Newark*, a steel protected cruiser that the U.S. Navy commissioned in the early 1890s as it began replacing its aging wooden and iron fleet. The image survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative, probably made around 1893 by a photographer working for the Detroit Publishing Company, which issued many views of ships, railroads, and American landscapes. Handwritten marks on the negative, including the word "Hart" and the number 208, hint at how the plate was cataloged, and the glass itself shows the careful, large-format work of that era.
