Junior officers aboard the U.S.S. Newark took their meals in this mess room, a space for the younger lieutenants and ensigns who ate separately from the senior officers. The Newark was a steel protected cruiser of the 1890s, part of the modern navy the United States built after decades of relying on wooden sailing vessels. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, produced views of ships, towns and scenery for sale to travelers and collectors. Its catalog of 1901 helps place the image within the decade of the Newark's active service.
