A group of junior officers from the battleship USS Maine stands for this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, which was made around 1896, though the date is uncertain. The Maine had been commissioned in 1895, and her loss in Havana harbor in February 1898 helped push the United States into the Spanish-American War. The negative is attributed to a photographer named Hart and was later issued by the Detroit Publishing Company. The glass has broken and been taped to a second sheet, a visible reminder of the plate's long life before it reached the collection.
