Here Secretary of the Navy Benjamin Tracy stands on the launching platform with his granddaughter, Alice Wilmerding, as the new battleship *Maine* is named in November 1889. The ship was built at the New York Navy Yard in Brooklyn and was among the first modern battleships of a U.S. Navy rebuilt after the Civil War. The ship's name later carried great weight, because the *Maine* exploded and sank in Havana harbor in February 1898, an event that helped push the United States into the Spanish-American War.
