Spectators crowd the waterfront at the New York Navy Yard in Brooklyn as the U.S.S. Maine slides down the ways in 1889, the year the steel-hulled warship was launched. Launchings drew large public audiences, and the Maine was part of the navy's effort to replace its aging wooden fleet with steel vessels. The ship gained lasting fame in 1898, when it exploded and sank in Havana harbor, an event that helped push the United States into the Spanish-American War. The glass negative, made by the Detroit Publishing Company, shows a visible break and repair, a reminder of the fragile medium that preserved this moment.
