Workers at the Brooklyn yard are shown sawing through the sole piece, the timber that held the hull on its building ways, just before the battleship U.S.S. Maine was released to slide into the water. Built as one of the Navy's first steel-hulled battleships, she drew a large crowd of onlookers to the waterfront for her launch. The picture survives as an 8 x 10 inch glass negative attributed to the photographer Hart, and its cracks and tape repairs show how fragile these early plates could be.
