Officers of the battleship U.S.S. Maine sat for this 1896 portrait, two years before the ship's loss in Havana harbor helped drive the United States into the Spanish-American War. The picture survives as two 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negatives, and the photographer is attributed to Hart based on similar numbering on the plates. It was issued by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose large catalog recorded American places and people around the turn of the century. Note the formal, upright poses typical of naval portraits of the period.
