Few photographs show the working spaces of a warship's enlisted crew as plainly as this view of the petty officers' mess aboard the U.S.S. Newark. The Newark was a protected cruiser built in the early 1890s, and the petty officers who ate here were the senior enlisted sailors who oversaw daily work and training below decks. The Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American landmarks and Navy ships in the decades around 1900, made this view, but the caption card gives no date. It is best read as a glimpse of everyday enlisted life aboard a steel cruiser of that period.
