The USS Missouri, a battleship commissioned in 1903, is the subject of this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, which captures the ship during the years when the U.S. Navy was building its first generation of large steel battleships. Missouri belonged to the pre-dreadnought class that formed the core of American naval power before all-big-gun designs made these ships obsolete. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued views of ships, cities and landscapes across the country, produced the image as a commercial subject, and large glass plates like this one gave such views their sharp detail. The plate later passed to the State Historical Society of Colorado, which received it as a gift in 1949.
