The battleship *Minnesota*, one of the Connecticut-class ships, was commissioned in 1907, and this view likely dates from the years when the newly built vessel was still drawing crowds at ports and naval events. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made a large body of travel and place views for railroads and publishers in the early twentieth century, recorded it on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative. The large plate size captures fine detail in the ship's hull, turrets, and rigging, which lets viewers study how American battleships looked during the decade when the United States was building its modern navy.
