The subject here is the gunboat U.S.S. Bancroft, named for George Bancroft, the Secretary of the Navy who founded the Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1845. The ship was a steel gunboat of the early 1890s, and this view was made on an 8 x 10 inch glass plate negative by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers recorded American places, ships and people for commercial sale. The plate's catalog date falls between 1893 and 1901, a period when the Navy was modernizing its fleet after decades of wooden vessels. Its steel hull and gun armament reflect that shift.
