This view shows the projectile carriers aboard the U.S.S. Vesuvius, a cruiser unlike most warships of its day. Rather than carrying conventional cannon, she was built to fire dynamite shells from pneumatic guns, a design associated with Army officer Edmund Zalinski. The carriers held and moved these heavy, specially made projectiles to the launching tubes, so the photograph documents the working machinery of the ship's unusual armament. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced this glass negative, issued many views of American naval vessels, and its work from this period gives a detailed record of late nineteenth-century shipboard equipment.
