The image shows the U.S.S. Terror during a speed trial, the timed run a warship made to measure its top speed under power. Terror was a turret ship, a monitor-type vessel with its guns housed in a rotating turret set low in the hull, a design the U.S. Navy favored for coastal defense in the late 1800s. Detroit Publishing Company photographers worked widely in the 1890s and early 1900s, recording American ships, cities, and landscapes on glass plate negatives. A speed trial like this one would have been a notable event for a naval crew, since performance on the measured course was a key test of a ship's engines and hull.
