The subject here is the U.S.S. *Terror*, a turret ship, or monitor, of the kind the U.S. Navy built for coastal defense in the late 19th century. Monitors sat low in the water and carried heavy guns in rotating armored turrets, so they looked very different from the sleeker cruisers and battleships that were replacing them. This large 11 x 14 inch glass negative was probably made between 1896 and 1901, a period when the Navy was expanding and modernizing its fleet. The image was likely taken by Edward H. Hart, a photographer who may have worked for the Detroit Publishing Company, which sold views of American landmarks and ships.
