Unlike the warships that usually fill this board, the U.S.S. *Solace* was a hospital ship, the first vessel the U.S. Navy set aside for that purpose. The Navy bought a former merchant steamer in 1898 and converted her to carry medical staff and supplies, and she took on sick and wounded sailors and soldiers during the Spanish-American War. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued this view in its 1901 catalog, produced thousands of photographs of American ships, ports and landmarks around 1900. The large glass negative preserves the ship's appearance at a time when the Navy was still deciding how to care for its wounded at sea.
