The Solace was the Navy's first dedicated hospital ship, converted from a merchant steamer when the Spanish-American War began in 1898. This glass-plate portrait shows the ship's captain, a reminder that her medical work depended on the officers who commanded her. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for large-format views of American places and people, made the negative in the same year the Solace was caring for sick and wounded men along the Cuban coast.
