Few pictures in this group show the people who tended the sick and wounded rather than the gun crews, and this one shows the pharmacists and nurses aboard the U.S.S. *Solace* in 1898. The *Solace* was a passenger steamer that the Navy bought that year and fitted out as a hospital ship, one of the first the service had, and it cared for casualties during the Spanish-American War. The plate is a large glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its views of American places around 1900, and the photographer is attributed to Hart based on matching negative numbers.
