Though this board is devoted to battleships, this portrait shows the navigator of the U.S.S. *Solace*, a hospital ship rather than a fighting vessel. The Navy bought the steamer in 1898, when it was still the passenger ship *Creole*, and fitted it out to carry sick and wounded men during the Spanish-American War. The 8 x 10 inch glass negative is dated 1898 and comes from the Detroit Publishing Company collection. It is attributed to a photographer named Hart based on similar negative numbers, so that attribution is not firmly confirmed.
